OMG. That is Fab. I have always wanted to go there. You won't have to worry about earthquakes there will you? How exciting. You have the gypsy in me jealous. Coffee for everyone!
Well I'm guessing this is why you've been so upset lately...I dont think Seattle will help with your Seasonal Affective Disorder. But, there are some bright spots: You and Tom will have happiness wherever you go because you will be together, Wrigley and Chumley will brighten even the gloomiest day, you'll have a whole new area to get to know and explore, and most important of all, you already have a friend in the area, Karen Gerstenberger! You might not like the idea, but you're like a ray of sunshine, the type of person that can have fun anywhere...
Ahhh.... I'm assuming this is why my comment last month about the "storm clouds" got to you.... it's All Making Sense now.
I'm so sorry you have to move away from beautiful San Diego. From the "tone" in your post, I can tell you're not happy. :-(
But hey - from what I hear, Seattle is a Very Cool place. I'm sure you'll find a niche there quickly and find all kinds of special wonderful things to love about it. And you'll have Tom, Chumley and Wrigs with you... so it will be a New Adventure for you and your family.
I now see why you've been stressing the past few weeks. For the record, I have enjoyed living vicariously through you weather-wise. Most of my family lives in Seattle and would perish the thought of living elsewhere. I live where I never thought I'd end up and have managed to remain happy. It's what we make of it, isn't it? I am fairly certain you too will be able to "live happy" no matter where you reside.
One thing's for certain: you'll have guaranteed great blog material for at least the next year. I look forward to the posts!
Oh, holy hell!! NOW it all makes sense! Well, one of my cousins used to live in Seattle, and I used to LOVE visiting him. I could very easily live in Seattle, which is why I'm afraid for you. Our preferences from climate couldn't be more opposite, could they? I loved that it was rainy everyday. Everything was so beautiful and lush and green. Even when I was there in January! The very first trip I ever took Lex on was a trip to visit my cousin in Seattle.
OK, I'm going to stop going on and on for now, even though I have so much more, because I know you're not happy about the whole situation. But, like so many others have commented, you will bring happiness to your new home because of your awesome personality.
I have had that same cartoon for a while. I didn't think you would think it was funny just yet!
Seattle has good & bad points, just like everywhere else. It will be an adventure. You know I am here if/when you need me, smileygirl. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Maggie! God bless you and Tom.
Tom sent me the cartoon this morning. At first I laughed, and then I cried.
Thank you for all the encouraging comments (though I'm not sure I'll spend my days catching fish at the fish market.) Sadly this is not an ideal move situation for us. And yes I am going to be on some serious drugs to cope with not seeing the sun 300+days a year. And I get cold when the temp drops below 70 degrees (remember the nose cozies?) So perhaps this blog will take on a different theme altogether.
Maggie is right again, the silver lining in this cloud (pun intended) is my incredible new friend Karen. She has been AMAZING and so helpful and generous and even though we've never met face to face (yet) we've talked and emailed quite a bit and to me, she already feels like family. I know for a fact I'd be in a hell of a lot worse shape than I am right now if it wasn't for her. I hope she knows how special she is to me.
This move is a job transfer for Tom and he doesn't have a choice in the matter. He's not thrilled about it either but what can you do? In today's economy he is lucky to have a job. We'll try to make the most of it but another sad fact is that we stand to lose quite a bit of money on our house which we had bought as an investment for the future. We had no idea the market would crash and that this move would happen so soon.
Then there's the thought of leaving my sister and our friends who are also like family here. And saying goodbye to an industry I love. But I have to be honest, my biggest fear in all of this is the weather. I'm really scared that I won't be able to cope and that it's going to affect other aspects of our life. I guess there's no sense on dwelling on it now. I need to enjoy the last few weeks and make the most of it while we're still here.
Sorry. This isn't going to be easy. But you'll get through it somehow. You will have to plan at least 3 trips to sunny places from October to May. It will make those months more bearable.
This is heavy! I, too, have been wondering what's up and was worried it was something medical. I'm relieved it's not but know this is big stuff. I have heard many good things about Seattle and believe you will make it a Live Happy life. I hope your experience replicates mine and my move, in that you will find even more of your true self in another place on the map. Seattle is lucky to have you and being near Karen will be awesome.
I have a sledgehammer you can borrow. You know, to work out some stress. ;-)
I couldn't agree more with everyone else. Remember that you are bringing your own brand of personality sunshine that will see you through your cloudiest days.
Your unique eye for the world around you will make it a joy for all of us in Blogistan to stay connected to your trials and triumphs up there in Seattle.
You already know how I feel about your move and what I think you're going to be able to acomplish. PLUS, you and Karen have found each other.
We are so blessed to live in a time when we can find dear friends so instantly and from so far away. Can you even imagine what the original frontier women felt when they decided to move west in this great land with their husbands? Whoa. Now THAT is what I call moving to an "unknown" location with no friends whatsoever to speak of. Wow!
I'll also add to everyone else's comments that Seattle is a neat city. Where else do you have a giant metal PENIS to greet your tourists?
So, for the sake of that penis tower and for visiting you (of course), I will be up in Seattle often, complete with my hippie-granola shoes, Patagonia vest, hemp scarf, and sustainable resource bamboo backpack.
Purr - I am sorry you have to move there - I hope it is not a perminate move for you - but if it is... you can always come visit Cali, it is not too far.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that it works out way better than you imagine. That global warming will burn off the clouds and suddenly that area becomes not only sunny, but warm all year round. And if that doesn't happen, then I'll keep praying that you somehow figure out to make it work for you, Tom, your kitty and pup.
Thanks again for those thoughts, prayers and encouraging comments. Sadly, this move is permanent unless my husband decides to leave Nordstrom. But we are both struggling with this move more than any other move we've made in the past and I really think time will tell. We want to come back to California one day and if we're up there for a couple years and we both decide that we need to come home, then we will figure out a way to make that happen. Our happiness and marriage must come first. For now I just have to live for today and pray that we'll make the most of it while we're there.
It will all work out.... I know it's difficult right now, but I see you and Tom a few years down the road, back in southern California. Sometimes things that seem like Huge Mountains in front of us turn out to be only hills when we get up to their base, and we're able to scale them and get around them a lot more quickly than we thought. I know it's a bummer going through it, and having to sell your home that you obviously love, but everything happens for a reason... and I'm sure you'll find wonderful new blessings folded into this, that you wouldn't have seen otherwise. Just keep your eyes open for the Beauty through it all. It will be there. (And remember - life is about "seasons" - and this upcoming difficult season will pass....)
Oh man, that sucks for you! Although, like Suz, the gypsy in me is jealous - new city, new state - starting over fresh. I hope everything works out for you - but I can just see you taking over the Seattle scene:)
I live in Seattle and have for about 2.5 years, having come from sunny FL and before that the Northeast. It takes some getting used to, but this whole week it's supposed to be sunny, in the 80's and gorgeous. This winter got to my husband and I a bit more than last winter, but the extended summer (summer usually last from late June - September) is nice. And there's no snow in the winter (well nothing more than a dusting if at all.) All in all, it's a neat city though...and the surrounding suburbs are great too!

WHAT?! Sadly, you're one of a dozen people in Orange County that I know. Maybe 20. Don't go!
Sorry... I'm selfish.
I always wanted to go to Seattle but you love where you are!
I hope this is good for you...

I have to say...you made it funny. How long have you been sitting on that cartoon?

Keep that chin up. :-)
CON: You could go to a fish market and try catching them. And then smell like fish all day. Maybe several.
PRO: You could collect your own rainwater to brew your coffee.
I now see why you've been stressing the past few weeks. For the record, I have enjoyed living vicariously through you weather-wise. CON: Given all the schmuck in our environment, who knows what kind of digestive issues you'd experience drinking rainwater.
PRO: You could buy a water filter.
CON: You would probably need the unfiltered water to wash off the smell of fish. Filtered water may just be too wimpy.

Why? Give us deets! Is it Tom's job? Do tell.

Oooo man!!!! I feel for you girl! Welcome to my world!
Sorry. This isn't going to be easy. But you'll get through it somehow. You will have to plan at least 3 trips to sunny places from October to May. It will make those months more bearable.
I'll be there next month with my wife to see the Red Sox.
Look for me. I'll be the guy in the Red Sox shirt.
Actually...that might be tough to figure out. Especially because at 5-foot-2, I kind of get lost in the crowd.
We should work out some gang sign or something.

At least there is some yummy grub out there.

What does Tom do for Nordstrom? Just curious.
