Today was not a good day for my tummy. I had some errands to take care of in the 'burbs and while doing so had another attack of the redundant colon. Luckily, my girlfriend lives close to where I was so I sped over to her house to take care of business. This isn't the first time this has happened and thankfully we're close enough friends that no words need to be exchanged as I go flying through her front door en route to the bathroom. She makes sure the magazines are stocked and even leaves a glass of ice water by the door for me.
I should clarify something about this redundant colon (also called "tortuous colon"). Yes it's a gross topic but it's not all about shitting. When I have an attack I get these incredibly sharp pains in my stomach, abdomen, or sometimes right under my ribs, it varies. Then my palms start sweating and I get really cold and nauseous and sometimes I throw up or dry heave until the pain subsides. The dry heaving is usually worse than throwing up because it lasts a lot longer and is exhausting. So why some of these issues are strictly bathroom related, about half of the time it's just intense pain and nausea and all I want to do is curl up into a ball, which is hard to do inside a tiny stall of a public bathroom.
My gastroentologist prescribed dicyclomine which seemed like a wonder drug for the first couple of months but it's not working so great anymore. Stress exacerbates the issue so I'm sure that's part of it. Ok I know there was a point to this post but now I can't remember what it was. The pain makes me forgetful so if I remember where I was going with this I'll come back to it.
*Update: In April 2011, I was diagnosed with Systemic Candidiasis (in my gut/colon). This has played a HUGE part in these digestive nightmares and for those of you suffering with similar issues PLEASE do some research, find a holistic doctor (if your medical doctor doesn't offer any help), and take control of getting your life back! For more information on what has helped me check out: Live Healthy (nocandidaallowed.blogspot.com). I no longer suffer like I used to and the biggest reason is due to a change in diet which has resulted in less inflammation in the gut. Had I known this YEARS ago, life would have been a whole lot different. But, it's never too late...there is hope and I am confident that at the very least, you will be able to alleviate the severity of your symptoms. Just don't give up.

I do not have gastroparesis as one Dr insisted even though I had a normal gastric emptying test. I found a new Dr. who started linzess which isn't doing anything. I had a cat scan and a colonoscopy. I thought the prep worked because I was going clear but the had to lavage and suction to get through the loops. I also have gastritis. I am miserable because I hurt constantly. I also look 8 months pregnant except that baby is carried a little high. I haven't had a bowel movement other than water from the combination of magnesium citrate and ducolax twice in 6 weeks. I want surgery to go back in and look at endo adhesions and take out my reproductive organs and part of my bowel. I have thought I had extra bowel for years. But here is my question. I can't eat soy, I can't tolerate meat, yogurt and kefir and cottage cheese are the only protein I eat. If I cut these out where can I get protein?
Forgot to mention that my last abdominal surgery was for endometriosis in 1992 in which everything in my abdomen was stuck to itself. Well that's how he makes it sound. Both ovaries on one side, noting in the right place. My next step is the injection and I am going to demand another surgery even if just on gynecological issues. I also have a fibroid. I guess maybe if we cleaned up the scar tissue and removed the reproductive organs there would at least be more room? I'm post menopausal. Oh yea, I now am sure the redundant colon causes the chronic pelvic wall spasms that keep me from having sex. It's all related.

Hi everyone. I'm so glad I've found this blog. I've had random bowel attacks as well, and pain with periods on and off. I ended up at the docs and had an ultrasound. The found a polyp in my uterus so cleared out all that. The doctor thought my pain was more bowelly pain. So I had a colonoscopy. It was clear but I was told I have a loopy bowel also. Seeing the surgeon on Wednesday to discuss this. The results on the internet are pretty vague. I hope that he can figure out a plan for me. The attacks are like labour pains. They build and build until I pass a motion. Then it repeats itself for however long it decides. to. It's awful and I don't know when it's going to happen. I also in the past was tested for coeliac but was told I had irritable bowel. Shall see what happens.

I'm glad I found this blog, and find it very comforting to know that there are so many people out there with the same condition as me. I found out that I had an extra large colon at the age of 14. I was having excruciating stomach pain and would often have to leave school for it. I saw a pediatric stomach specialist and got every stomach procedure done, and the colonoscopy is what finally made them realize what it was. They told me that my colon was 3 times larger than most peoples and this was very rare. Until I just looked this up tonight, I was not even aware that there was a name for it. At the time I was told that I had also had a few hernias that were not concerning, but could be if I kept getting them by not softening my stool. I haven't seen a doctor about it since and live my life as a normal 20 year old now. I still take an over the counter medicine called Digestive Advantage everyday to control the intestinal gas that I often have to deal with from the not only my colon being longer, but also my lactose intolerance. Besides that, I have little trouble with it. I have recently started to wonder if anything will happen when I start thinking about having a child. I was wondering if anyone knew if complications can often occur or if the colon just moves with the growth of a baby. I read a report recently about the colon getting twisted during a woman's pregnancy causing many complications, and it kind of freaked me out! So any feedback on experience with pregnancy and this condition would be much appreciated!

I figured that out after years of pain. Low fiber means less gas That has helped a lot.
I was diagnosed with a redundant colon in 2009 and was sent to a surgeon in chapel hill for him to remove that part of my colon along with a rectocele tear and a enterocele. He did the repair on the rectum but refused to take out the extra Colon. He did explain to me about the enterocele and I didn't need that part of it fixed. So I have been suffering every since then with so many nights not hardly being able to sleep because of the pain in my abdomen. These past couple of weeks I have had diarrhea and bloating, pain and misery and not being able to hardly eat anything at all except soft foods. I have asked my doctor to send me to a surgeon who does the surgery to remove that part of my colon and I'm waiting for the phone call from my doctor. I just want complete relief from this pain and misery so I can live somewhat of a normal life. I also have IBS and mild colitis along with so many other diseases that have moved into my body. My heart goes out to anyone who had pain anywhere in their bodies.
Is anyone still active here? I just found out i have redundant also.. im 35 and have had 3 c sections my gi mentioned scar tissue after my colonoscopy. Symptoms just stayed about 6 months ago I'm assuming stress makes it worse?

Hello, it is 2018. I am in my mid 30s now but was diagnosed many years ago via a colonoscopy as well. Diet has hardly helped me. My immune system is not so strong as I have autoimmune issues as well such as Hashimotos hypothyroidism. I am working on removing infections like candida and parasites. They contribute to this issue for sure. Thank you for this blog. Can I ask if you ever went back for a colonoscopy to see if there has been any improvement in the anatomy? I think even an abdominal ultrasound can diagnose this condition now.

I feel your pain. I am seventy-four and was only, and at last, diagnosed eighteen months ago. It steal one's quality of life away. Dr's do not know much about this issue and seem to get irritated by all one's different pains, etc. I found some tablets in SouthAfrica, DisChem Gold Colon Support which I found very helpful, but it still does not change the diagnosis. Shalom to all my co-suffering family stay strong.
