you say tomato

I say...waste of money!

what you are looking at is the result of 3 topsy turvy tomato plant attempts. Coupled with a $158 water bill I'd say this crop was a big fat bust. Not sure what to do with this one tomato though. I feel as though it should be honored seeing it's the only viable source of food that sprung from the plant's loins. Maybe I'll make the world's smallest bloody mary. For Chumley.

First of all, let me just say - Holy crap, 5 posts in one day!!!

I've been using the same planter boxes for years now on my deck for my tomatoes. This year, my tomatoes didn't do so well, and I'm assuming it's because the soil must be completely depleted of any and all nutrients. I harvested exactly 4 cherry tomatoes! Yeah...big waste of time....

Boy, can I relate! I had a very UNsuccessful attempt at growing peppers on my balcony this summer. Caterpillars got 'em. And my parsley shriveled up and died. And now my begonias are dying too. But I do dream about a veggie garden and blueberries.

2 Summers ago, Ron and I decided to have a HUGE garden in our backyard. We planted about 7 varieties of heirloom tomatoes.... we had to mail order the seeds. He rented a tiller - had MANURE delivered to our house - QUITE the undertaking, let me tell you. We had visions of a bumper crop (we also planted corn, jalapenos, squash, cucumbers, jalapenos, watermelons, etc.)

Unbeknownst to us, this was the year that the worst drought in all recorded history would hit Georgia. We did not get ONE edible tomato. Not even one. We got shriveled, sad little things... the only thing that thrived were the jalapenos (apparently they do OK in drought). So yes, I understand your frustration.... (because very little in life is as delicious as a vine ripened tomato, drizzled with EVOO, fresh cracked pepper, and a slice of fresh mozzarella....

Alas.
