Ding Dongs

So much for my carb rant earlier, for dessert we're having Ding Dongs mashed in Vanilla ice cream! Have you ever tried it? It's sinful! Ok does anyone else LOVE the name Ding Dongs? I think it's quite honestly the best name ever in the history of snack treats. Or any food stuff for that matter. I love them so much I feel the need to write a poem:

DING DONG, who is there?
DING DONG. I don't care.
DING DONGS in my hair.
I'll eat DING DONGS anywhere!
YUM YUM YUM.

I'm Steamed

I'm in the process of making dinner right now, (it's on the stove so I have a few minutes to blog) and it's no wonder the wind's outta my sails when I attempt to cook. I got some Pollo Asada and thought it would go great with some Jambalaya rice, sort of a Pollalaya combo if you will. Earlier today when I was shopping for the rice mixture (of course I'm not making this sh*t from scratch) I was careful to select one with a lower carb count. I do watch my carbs, especially in the evening because women have a tendency to stop burning their carbs in the late afternoon so I don't like to overdo it. And you know what? It works.

Most of the boxes had a per serving carb count of anywhere between 40 and 46 grams so I said "SCREW THAT!" (literally out loud in the aisles.) I was about to move onto to something else when I picked up one last box, glanced at the carbs and saw 29g so I said, "Hallelujah" and tossed it into my cart.

Well now I'm home, whipping up this sweet smellin' meal and I take a closer look at the box and see that it says, "SERVES SIX". I think, "Are you kidding me? This tiny little packet of rice serves six full grown human beings?!?" Then I examine the nutritional information on the side a bit more closely and see that a serving size equates to THREE TABLESPOONS! What is this? The Paris Hilton/Calista Flockhart portion sized meal plan? Ok the last time I was able to feel comfortably satiated by 3 tablespoons of anything was.....NEVER?!? I'm sooo pissed right now. I actually consumed HALF of my meal by simply testing out a spoonful of this rice to see if it was done. What a let down.

I scooped out 3 tbsps of the rice and put them on our plates and it looked like golf balls in a bathtub. So I added another 3, and still it didn't even fill up half the plate. Needless to say Tom and I consumed enough for 6 people so we'll both be hitting the gym extra hard tomorrow. Stupid, dumb rice.

Pumpkin Pooch Pies

Last night I whipped up a batch of Pumpkin dog treats and let me tell you, they were a HUGE hit around this house. Even Chumley gobbled them! Here are the boys enjoying some pumpkin spice batter straight off the wooden spoon. See? There can be pockets of harmony in this house after all.

Wrigs and I will be making deliveries this weekend (dressed as pumpkins) to all our special dog friends. And Bridget, if you're reading this, can you hear who I have playing in the background? He makes baking Oh so much fun!

Remember those pockets of harmony I spoke of? Well they never last very long. Here was the scene later in the evening at dinner...

Poor Chum's paws were red and raw. And if Wrig's face wasn't covered in fur I'm sure he'd be black and blue.

a typical morning...

Tom and I have an ongoing "debate" about how I park my car in the garage. He thinks I'm too close to the side and is afraid that I'm going to snap off my side mirror when I back out. To make matters worse a few days ago there was a gigantic cricket in the garage and I put a kitchen bowl over it to keep it from hopping into the house. Well it's been 3 days and as of this morning the bowl was still there. I almost ran over the bowl one time as I was pulling in so now when I park I make sure to move over to the side so I don't run over the bowl and subsequently blast out my tire. This morning before he leaves for work he notices the car and comes back from the garage to tell me, "Pay attention when you're backing out of the garage." I tell him "No, I actually prefer to back out of the garage with my eyes closed." He doesn't like that and then says, "You have two choices. You can call me at work and tell me that you smashed up the car...OR...you can pay attention." I tell him, "Oh I wouldn't call you if I smashed up the car. I'd just keep on driving. Probably to Mexico." He heads back into the garage.

He comes back with the bowl in hand and says, "Your cricket friend was still alive, I let him go."

Well it's about damn time. I was wondering how long it was going to be before he moved that bowl.

Who do you look like?

A friend of mine emailed me this website called myheritage.com where you upload a photo of yourself and it will scan a celebrity database and then match up the celebrities you most closely resemble. Well I was bored tonight so I did it. And apparently I'm a dead ringer for Susanna Hoffs from the Bangles?!? And Raven Simone??? Are they serious?

So here are all my celebrity look a likes and I can't seem to find any similarities amongst all 6 of us. If anything we look like a feminist ad for the United Nations. At least they didn't match me up with any dudes. I really hope someone else does this and lets me know what they come up with.

Ok I had to do Tom's picture and OH BOY is this good!!! Norah Jones?!? Engelbert Humperdinck?? This is too much! This site is addicting.

I want to upload Chumley's picture, but I'm afraid of what will come back.

Public Service Announcement to all you Winos...

Quite possibly the WORST tasting wine I've ever laid my lips on...

Castoro Cellars 2006 Muscat Canelli

In my ongoing quest to find something new and exciting in the aisles of Trader Joe's I thought I'd give this wine a whirl. Oh MY God. It's just awful. Probably should have realized it wasn't going to win any awards by the $3.99 price tag and screw top (yes I know it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that screw top = cheap ass wine but quite honestly, I liked the look of the bottle). And I like blended wines with Muscato so I thought perhaps I'd enjoy a full bodied Muscat. Not the case.

I'm trying to sip a glass of it as I type and it's giving me heart burn, acid reflux, a headache and spastic colon all at the same time. I never even knew that was possible. It's really quite disappointing since I was hoping this battery acid would compliment one of my favorite appetizers, Trader Joe's Pastry bites with feta cheese and carmelized onions. I highly recommend this dish and if you pair it with a green salad, you've got yourself one delicious meal. But I hate to waste food or drink so I think this wine will serve a higher purpose and eat away at the rust stains in the toilet. It's seriously that bad.

Coming soon to Televisions Everywhere...

(We're looking at a Spring '08 premiere date and we'll of course have a viewing party here at the house! Chumley will be paw printing autographs for a nominal fee.)

    Garage Day 2007

Has anyone seen that commercial where the woman opens her garage door and her car is buried beneath piles and piles of crap and she can't see it but when she clicks the remote to unlock the car you hear the beep and see the head lights flash? Well that was pretty close to the condition of our garage so today we decided to tackle it.

And I didn't take any before pics but I grabbed the camera in the midst of cleaning so here are some photos of the purging process and our what nots...

And here are some pics of Tom rifling through the what nots and making the always difficult executive decision on where to put them...

Tom recently hung a plastic golf ball in the garage in an effort to help me park far enough away from the garage door to avoid closing the door on the back of my car and thus scraping off the paint on my rear bumper (still need to get this fixed by a professional- my Sharpie technique is not looking so good). But with the cars out of the garage, the hanging ball reminded me of a game I played as a child called Zim Zam! Ever heard of it? The one we had actually screwed into the grass so you could really whack the bejesus outta the ball and the pole would remain intact. It wasn't as much fun playing with the golf ball hanging from the ceiling...

Tom says, "Enough clowning around. There is work to be done." So I head back to my post and start to organize our sporting goods. I find an old aluminum bat as Tom is carrying a wooden moving dolly. I suddenly have an idea and ask to see the dolly. He hands it over and says, "What are you planning on doing with that?" I tell him to wait and see...

And yet another child memory came to mind! Remember those wooden wheel contraptions you had in grade school? I can't remember what the heck they were called but we used to play with them during recess. We'd pretend they were boats and use big sticks to push our way around the parking lot. All of this before video games of course.

Off I went sailing down the driveway as Tom shouts "Watch out for the cars!" Not to worry, I'm a pro at this.

It was a close call but I made it past the cars without a scratch. And off I go into the street! Yipee!!! I didn't realize how much of a hill we have on our street and I started to gain speed pretty fast so I decided I better stop before I crash into something.

I put the bat and dolly away and head inside for a drink of water and a phone call or two. And by the time I came back...the garage was clean! So of course a celebratory cart wheel is in order...

Who would have thought cleaning the garage could be this much fun.

    Shenanigans

I have some more pics to post from last week in LA...

Rebecca doing a cartwheel in the middle of the restaurant.

Me balancing a candelabra atop my head as I walk around the restaurant.

Rebecca getting the "thumbs up" before she starts her mechanical bull riding adventure complete with safety helmet.

Rebecca's bull riding adventure plastered on the plasma screens at the restaurant for the remainder of the night.

Oddly enough, this was a pretty tame night out for us.

When was the last time you saw one of these???

Do you even know what that is? It is the inside of my rental car that I had last week and YES that is a roll up window!!! My rental car was a Chevrolet Aveo, made in 2006 and can you believe it did not have automatic windows or locks!?!?! I thought that came standard with every car made since 1982! I couldn't believe it. When the rental car guy led me to this vehicle I thought he was kidding and I laughed out loud. Then he tried to persuade me to purchase the extra insurance that covers all dents, dings and scrapes, and I kept telling him 'I'm not interested', 'thanks but no thanks', 'I already have coverage' and as I'm pulling out of the parking lot I'm fiddling with the bootleg radio not really paying attention and come within millimeters of SMASHING into another car pulling in. And of course this takes place in front of the building (which is all windows) where the rental car attendants are staring open mouthed, so I pull back into the parking space and begrudgingly sign up for the extra insurance.

I did manage to have some fun with it though. Remember, my girlfriend from Chicago was in town so we made the most of it and had quite a ball toolin' around LA in this hot rod.

Especially when we had to valet park. We'd make sure to tell the valet attendant to 'take good care of my Daewoo' and they would park it amongst all the Benz's, Porcshe's and Beemer's. Yeah, that's just how we roll.

    We have Lawn Shrimp

These are called Lawn Shrimp or House Hoppers, scientific name: Talitroides Sylvaticus, a terrestrial crustacean. There are hundreds and hundreds of them laying dead in our back yard. I googled them and found out that they are very common in LA and Orange County, especially after rain. It's really gross when we let Wrigs out and he comes back covered in these crusty buggers. It could be worse. We could have these.

    fun times

It's been a busy week and I've not had more than a few minutes to sit at the computer and I'm rushing now as it is. Heading down to San Diego for the night to see a fashion show then dinner and fun with the hubby.

My travel partner and partner in crime is also in town this week (mostly for work) but we've managed to get away for some fun too. We went out last night in LA and I have many more pics (and video) to share when I have more time to download. But for now here is one that makes me laugh out loud. More on this story later...

Every time the two of us get together the most random, unexplainable things happen to us. We must have some type of cosmic energy when we are together because it's just not normal! I WISH she lived here but then again if she did, I would probably be blogging behind bars. Hey that sounds like a new tv series!

Gotta run but I'll be back later tomorrow with more updates.

    For all you coffee lovers...

Trader Joe's Java Floe Cafe Latte Frozen Bars are A MUST HAVE!!!
They are fat free, only 130 calories and combine just the right blend of coffee taste (not flavor, they are made with REAL coffee) in a frozen ice cream treat. I'm eating one now as I type and it's so good I can't even put it down for two seconds to finish this entry. The bottom of the bar is melting and dripping onto my thumb and now it's trickled down onto the keyboard so I better tend to this before I'm stuck with more sticky keys. This is just one of the reasons Tom tells me his lap top is off limits. I wonder what the other reasons are...

Just got some java floe on my white shirt - knew that was going to happen.

    Two for Tuesday

2 animal posts in one day!!! Woooo Hoooo Lucky YOU!

Wrigs is SOOOO possessive of his toys (not sure where this comes from, we don't take them away from him or ration his playtime) that he has to sleep ON them. I got him a couple new balls the other day since he destroyed his others and this blue one is his absolute favorite, he won't let it out of his sight for a second! He's also quite fond of his one armed monkey...

(for some odd reason blogger will not allow me to post larger pics so you'll have to click on the image in order to view it in full screen)

(also, if you're wondering what that nipple looking thing is in the middle of the floor, it's a remnant from his last ball that he destroyed. I stopped picking up all the bits and pieces of toys throughout the day and just wait til morning - plus half of these bits end up in Chum's food bowl anyway!)

Speaking of Wrigs new balls I had a funny exchange while in the check out line at Petco purchasing the balls.

    Petco Guy:
(as he grabs the 2 balls) This it for you today?

    Me:
Yep, just here to get some balls.

    (petco guy chuckles)

    Me:
My dog keeps chewing up the ones he has and they're all falling apart!

    Petco Guy:
    OUCH!!!

(family in line behind me starts laughing)

    Me:
Wait, that didn't come out right.

    Wrigs n Chum playing

Been a while since I've posted any Wrigley/Chum videos so here is one from the other night. Notice how they were playing nicely together or as Tom says they were "more irritatingly annoyed at me dangling the shiny wrist band in their faces than they were at each other." I still like to think of it as playtime. As you can see a good time was had by all...

    Question

How does one watch this show without tears streaming down their face?
You know what else? That Ty Pennington is pretty damn cute too.

Best Key Lime Martini in Town

Since moving here in '03 I have yet to find a place that makes a really good Key Lime Martini...until now. A girlfriend of mine (who I've known since high school and then randomly worked with years later on the Jenny Jones show) was visiting from NYC and on Friday we went out to a fabulous restaurant in LA called Jar. This place makes the BEST Key Lime Martini's. They were sooo delicious, not too sweet not too tart, just perfect. I lost count after my 3rd. We'll definitely head up there again soon.

Kind of put me in the baking mood so I found this simple recipe on line for Key Lime Pie. (though I don't recommend pairing the two together unless you want lime green poop)

    KEY LIME PIE
1- 9" graham cracker pie shell
1- 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
3 egg yolks (whites not used)
1/2 cup Nellie & Joe's key west lime juice
Combine milk, egg yolks and lime juice. Blend until smooth. Pour filling into pie shell and bake at 350°F degrees for 15 minutes. Allow to stand 10 minutes before refrigerating. Just before serving, top with freshly whipped cream and garnish with lime slices.

    Cubs Suck!!!

The game is still going on but it's so incredibly frustrating to watch so I decided to search online for some Cub related pictures. I am seriously DONE with the Cubs and am hanging up all my Cubs gear for a while. I can't handle the highs and lows that go along with the role of being a Cub fan anymore. It's not healthy. It's like being in an abusive relationship yet you keep going back for more. I'm done. Enjoy the photos...

    Pumpkin Day

Tom suggested we get pumpkins today so off we went, Wrigs included, to a local pumpkin farm. It was something I didn't even know existed here in Southern Cal. Tom knew of this place because it butts up against a golf course he's played before so I guess some good comes out of his playing every course within a 150 mile radius. The farm was adorable, and if it wasn't for the mountains in the background and no snow on the ground, I would have thought that we time warped ourselves back into Minnesota. (side note: the year we lived there we awoke to a snow covered world on October 6th, 2002. I cried everyday til March)

Here are some pics from Pumpkin Patch day. Unfortunately, no pets were allowed and Tom didn't want to pretend that Wrigs was my seeing eye dog for the day so poor Wrigs had to wait in the car. =(

    "Let's get some Pumpkins!!"

"I like this one. It matches my shirt. Tom, you find one to match your shirt!"

    "This is really stupid."

Then Tom tossed a small white pumpkin to me (not sure why, he just called my name and as I looked up it was heading right towards my face) so I jumped back because I was afraid of getting stabbed in the eye by the stem. People were watching us and I think they thought we were there to pumpkin bash. So we tossed our 'kins into the wheel barrow and headed to the check out line.

And there sits our loyal companion patiently waiting for his pumpkin bashing family to return.

He pretended for a minute to be mad at us since he couldn't come along (see that pouty face!?)
What he doesn't know is that I plan on making it up to him and experimenting with some yummy pumpkin flavored doggy biscuits!!

And of course the day would not be complete without the seasonal Starbuck's "tall, non-fat, decaf, 2 pump, xtra hot, Pumpkin spice latte." And I kid you not, that is how the barrista announced my drink when it was ready even though my name was written on the cup.
    Cracks me up everytime.

a cute Chumley story for a change...

Poor lil' Chum has no toys to play with since Wrigs swallowed his mouse toy over a year ago. We just can't take that chance again so we had to permanently put away all of his playthings. But Chum is pretty resourceful when it comes to finding other objects to play with, for example, he LOVES to play with q-tips he finds in the garbage, crumpled up receipts, and even dollar bills. All of these things eventually end up in his food bowl and several times a week I fish them out and throw them away (except for the bills).

Wrigley on the other hand, has a large basket overflowing with all his toys, balls and bones. And we are constantly recycling these toys because he likes to destroy many of them in seconds flat, especially stuffed ones with dangling arms or legs. But Chum is quick to grab his mangled castaways and run off to a safe place with his "new" toy. This is what I found in his food bowl today...

This cat makes me laugh. Sometimes.

    Wrigley Gonzalez

More often than not, the top of my dog's head smells like a Mexican Corn Tortilla. Even after bathtime. Anyone know what could be the cause of this? It's not a putrid smell but it's just sort of pungent and it makes me hungry for guacamole and crave Margaritas.

This is why we can't watch the discovery channel together...

My dear sweet husband told me the other day that my head is similar in shape to that of a Beluga whale.

After he picked up all the broken glass and I regained consciousness he then says, "You know I meant that in a loving way."

me: "Oh of course you did. It's really quite sweet."

him: "It's just 'cause your brain is so big you need a big cranium to hold it all in."

me: "Well not all of us are born with heads that can fit atop a pencil."

him: "Oh so my head is too small?"

me: "Well if you're saying mine is the size of a Beluga whale then yes, in comparison, yours is very, very tiny. And not only that, there's really not much shape to it."

him: "Really? So I've got a small block head?"

me: "No, not really a block."

    him: "Egg head?"

me: "Nah, an egg still has a shape to it."

    him: "So what then?"

me: "Let me think about it."

him: "I was just kidding about your head before. It doesn't really look like a Beluga whale."

    A small video...

I made a little picture video of my trip that I'd like to share with all of you...
