The New Road Rage...

Watch out for flying burritos!!
  • CA Road Rage

  • My favorite part of this story: "Flagmen working for contractor Skanska Inc. were soon targeted as tempers began to flare. They were cursed at and had objects, including a burrito, flung at them."

You know it's going to be a bad day when you get smacked in the face with one of these.

How Chumley wakes me up in the morning...

My alarm went off and instead of getting out of bed that instant, I stayed bundled up and watched the stupid news on Paris Hilton's jail break. Well Chum was not happy about this and was determined to get me upright and on my feet. Here he is biting me hard and trying to pull my arm off to get me out of bed. Thankfully I woke up freezing the night before and threw on a sweatshirt. I would have been bloody otherwise.

(The quality is not that good but this is the only way I was able to get the video to work. There is sound too.)

  • Chumley wake up1

  • Chumley wake up2
  • Then there's this guy

who is the total opposite of Chum. Wrigley could not be more sweet and loving in the morning.

Sometimes we let him come up in bed with us. You'd think this was an everyday routine because he instantly plops his head on the pillow and wants to sleep. He'll put his paw on my neck and will keep nudging me until I rub his elbows. He loves his elbows rubbed. You can see in this photo he has bedroom eyes. He's such a lover boy.

    Chumley and Bear

He's a little camera shy in this clip. But you can definitely see his sweeter side.

One reason I love my husband...

(Of course there are many more than just "one" but I honestly don't think my computer has enough memory to list all of them!)

My husband is a clothes snob. This is not the reason I love him, I'm just pointing out a fact. He has exquisite taste and prefers quality fabrics and designer labels. It's not to say he doesn't wear non-designer duds from time to time but for the most part, he likes the good stuff. Me on the other hand, I'm somewhere in the middle.

Over the weekend we had some errands to run together one of which included a Target stop. I told him while we were there that I'd like to look at some of their lightweight cotton bras for summer. He just about fell over. He said, "You can't buy bras at Target! They're so cheap, they'll fall apart after you wear them twice!" I told him that's not the case, I'm just shopping for simple cotton bras not some high quality French lingerie. He suggested we head to Nordstrom's instead to check out their selection. I said I didn't want to spend a lot of money so Target bras will do just fine. He shrugged and said fine, and told me to look for him in Automotives when I'm done.

I found 7 bras right off the bat and headed into the dressing room. None of them worked. Went back out to the bra racks for round 2. This time I brought back 6 bras and a couple of them had all these crazy convertible straps so you could make the bra into a halter, wear it strapless, or even move the straps down around your belly for backless shirts and dresses. I was having some serious struggles with this contraption and ended up getting my hair completely tangled into the bra straps and then banged my elbow into the wall of the dressing room which sent me over the edge. Then my cell phone starts ringing and I'm too worked up (and tangled up) to answer it so instead I just continue to Houdini myself out of this mess. I'm now cursing like a truck driver as I literally rip chunks of my hair from the bra hooks. I figure there's no way this bra is going to make it over my head without resulting in self strangulation so I now stretch it beyond belief and shimmy it down over my hips and then slither out of it like a snake. My face is all red, I'm hot and sweaty and the bra looks like it just came out of a blender. I finally check my phone and Tom sends me this text message (which is one of the reasons I love him):

"WIFE, R U DONE SMASHING UR FUN BAGS INTO THAT CHEAP ASS UNDERWEAR???"

Needless to say no bras were purchased at Target that day.

    Another reason I love Enrique...

This is how he warms up before he hits the stage!

An addiction that's good for you???

    Well, not really.

But it contains Niacin, Vitamins B6 and 12, zinc and magnesium. So it's sort of healthy? I guess so. That is if you take away all the caffeine, artificial sweeteners and phenylalanine for those who are phenylketonuric. Yes, it's official I have TOO much time on my hands. I google everything on my food and drink labels. Oh and probably not a good idea to drink this out of a can. That will only lead to an early onset of Osteoporosis and Alzheimer's. But if you're cool with that...ENJOY!! This stuff actually tastes pretty good. Now if I can only remember where I put my keys...

    Wrigley McButter

This is what is settling in my dog's stomach right now. He ate the butter (still wrapped in paper) right off the counter when I went to take the trash outside. When I came back into the kitchen he would side glance at me and avoid direct eye contact while he kept licking his lips and swallowing. At first I didn't realize what he had gotten into but then when I got my toast out of the world's greatest toaster I discovered the butter was missing. I quickly searched online and not surprisingly many other dogs have consumed sticks of butter (and much worse!). I was to expect an explosion of runny diarrhea and perhaps some vomiting. What fun! I took him outside and watched for about an hour and nothing. Now we're back inside and another hour has passed and so has a LOT of gas. I'm thinking the butter is making it's way through his intestinal tract as I type. I think he has a bit of a tummy ache because he's breathing kind of heavy and I can hear some gurgles and squeaks coming from his belly. But I don't doubt if given the opportunity, he'd do it all over again!

    Things I've learned...

(I've been compiling this list for several years and I'm constantly adding to it. Here are some that are safe for this blog, and a few of these happened before I was married...)

    1) For those in the midwest - Cub Foods does not bag your groceries. So don’t stand there for 15 minutes like a prima donna "tsk-ing" impatiently waiting for someone to put all your food away.
    2) Don’t attempt to pluck your eyebrows while driving on the crowded LA freeways. Off peak times would be better, but it’s really probably best to wait until you’re on residential roadways at a much lower speed limit provided there aren't any speed bumps.
    3) Never set computer passwords after a couple glasses (or a bottle) of wine. You think you’re being clever by naming your Internet Banking password “room is spinning” or “pee in my pants” but inevitably you’re going to forget this password and have to face the humiliation of contacting a live banking representative so they can reset your password when you are unable to access your account.
    4) Always remove high heels before trying on clothes in a dressing room. It's really difficult to balance on one leg in a tiny stiletto heel. I’m not really sure what’s worse, being in your own private dressing room and bashing your forehead into the large mirror monitored by store personnel or being in one of those enormous cafeteria sized dressing rooms alongside 20 other half naked bodies then losing your balance and having to grab onto someone else to prevent a painful and embarrassing fall.
    5) When traveling in an airplane do NOT double (or triple) up on a dose of Airbone tablets thinking it will work twice as hard at repelling germs and sickness around you. Your body will not be able to process the excess Vitamin C and you'll spend the duration of the flight in the tea cup sized bathroom with the most violent bout of diarrhea you've ever had in your life.
    6) Never run down the hallway with a box of kitty litter that is full of cat poop. Obviously the cat freaks out and chases after you, wondering, “What the hell is she doing with my toilet” and will zoom in and out of your legs, consequently tripping you and sending you crashing to the floor, face planting yourself right into the shit box.
    7) Never tell your do-it-your-selfer husband that you’ll just sit in the car and wait while he runs in for a couple things at Home Depot. Unless, you have enough food for two meals, a fully charged I-pod, plenty of liquids and a steamy romance novel. Otherwise, be prepared to be extremely bored, then annoyingly irritated at the multiple people parked next to you who enter and exit with just a small bag of purchases while you sit and stew in the hot sun. AND! Do not attempt to find said husband in the store because of course he will be in plumbing fixtures while you’re searching feverishly in lawn and garden and could potentially spend the next 2 hours of your life zig zagging around the entire store without ever making contact.
    8) When moving into a new neighborhood, it is best not to meet your new neighbors and families after a few cocktails. Sometimes you may not hear what you think you’ve heard and this could create an uncomfortable situation. Like for example if a mother is introducing her son who is “autistic” and your drunk ass hears “artistic” a response such as “AWESOME!!” is typically not welcome.
    9) Always carry feminine products in a purse or hand bag in an office setting when heading to the bathroom. Never think you are being clever by hiding a super tampon in your sleeve and then heading to the women’s restroom unnoticed. You never know if you’re going to bump into someone like the CEO of your corporation who is visiting from London and will suddenly be forced to make an introduction and as you reach to shake his hand, the white cigar slowly slides out from under your sleeve, gently resting between your thumb and your red faced CEO’s thumb, thus creating an incredibly awkward, albeit memorable first impression.
    10) Never leave voice mail messages while in a public work environment for your sick cat who hasn’t pooped in 3 days. It is best to leave those messages when you are safely behind closed doors so no one, like you’re visiting CEO, will come up behind you as you’re squawking into the phone, “Did you poopy poopy yet today my big boy?”
    11) Make sure to set an alarm if, while coloring your hair at home, you decide to take a quick 5 minute cat nap. Sometimes our internal clocks are never as good as the real thing, unless of course you like orange roots with yellow streaks and hair that feels like a Brillo pad for the next 6-9 months.
    12) While it’s good to be friendly and kind to others, it’s probably not a good idea to spend too much time chatting with the overly chatty Wal-mart greeter, unless you enjoy being followed around the store for the duration of your shopping excursion and being asked questions like, “Can I come to your house and see your refrigerator?” or “Do you like cheese? I DO!” You don’t want to appear rude and tell them to leave you alone so you continue to answer a barrage of questions, none of which have anything to do with the previous question and before you know it, an hour has passed, you’ve only got a 12 pack of toilet paper in your cart and you’ve basically told this complete stranger your innermost thoughts on vacuuming, hammer-head sharks and circus peanuts.
    13) Don’t mix alcohol, antibiotics, codeine and a video camera. You may end up forgetting something rather unpleasant you said about one of your friends and then showing him or her the videotape at a later date. Even if it is 12 hours after it happened.
    14) Never, ever, ever attempt to operate a riding lawn mower for the first time without your husband present. Especially when you have a gigantic hole in your front yard from a tree trunk that had to be removed because of an insect infestation. You may end up getting the hell on wheels stuck in the hole and although quite entertaining for neighbors and speed walkers, it is a very traumatic and humiliating experience that could result in missing limbs.
    15) For those on the east and mid west - It is ok to take a break from the summer sun when it’s locust season, after all it is only every 17 years! So, don’t attempt to brave the flying beasts and try to lay out in the sunshine. You will only be smacked in the face, chest, stomach, or thighs by these enormous buzzing tootsie rolls which will cause you to convulse uncontrollably and shout out obscenities while trying to rid these critters off of your body as if impersonating an ancient tribal rain dance.
    16) Always slow your treadmill down to a moderate walking pace when adjusting your music selection on your i-pod. You may think you have the balance of a trapeze artist and the agility of a gazelle but all it takes is one misstep and the next thing you know your i-pod slams down on the fast moving belt and takes off like a rocket launching itself through mid air eventually striking the elderly man in the kneecap on the stationery bike behind you.
    17) Just because a slightly overweight woman shopping in the infants department is picking out baby clothes, don’t feel compelled to make small talk and say, “Oh boy, you must be due any day now!” Women come in all different shapes and sizes and some have a tendency to carry a little more weight in the mid section. Keep that in mind so you don’t unnecessarily insult someone with the ‘oh you’re so large, you must be pregnant!’ comment.
    18) Never trust a hangover fart when wearing white pants.
    19) If after several visits to the chiropractor you end up walking like a crooked old man with a stick up his ass and make obnoxious clicking noises every time you stand up or sit down, it’s probably a good idea to get a medical doctor’s opinion sooner rather than later.
    20) When dining alone, always make sure to check your face and teeth in a mirror before leaving the restaurant. Especially after eating blueberries or anything with little dark seeds for that matter. Strangers will NOT tell you.
    21) Never test to see if your professional grade ceramic curling iron is still on by grabbing the scorching barrel with your bare hand. A safer way to check is to just look and see if the red light is still on or better yet, just unplug it when you’re done with it to avoid this scenario entirely.
    22) When driving, if you happen to pull up next to a cute guy, it’s ok to flirt but never, ever plan on meeting him for a drink at the local watering hole later in the day. You may end up sitting there waiting for Mr. Gorgeous to walk in only to be horrifically disappointed when you spot Mr. Gorgeous’s face attached to a 4 foot 10 inch body.

Chumley and Wrigley on youtube finally!

Here they are enjoying their favorite night time snack, turkey pastrami. Please ignore my annoying voice throughout the video. I promise to remain silent in future videos.

When Chumley jumps up on the counter he heads right to the bag of pastrami and starts chomping away. I had already put the camera away once I realized what he was doing. When I went over to scold him he swatted at my finger.

Apparently I didn't pick up all of Chumley's bear stuffing. He must have found some under the couch or coffee table and brought it to his food bowl with the other things he hoards in there. Poor little mental case.

    Animal Overload

I've been blogging so much about my animals lately that I may just need to start their own blogsite! Ok this will be the last one for today, I promise. Wrigley is just so proud of himself that I had to share. He has his two favorite toys, his monster and his orange ball and he tries and tries to put them both in his mouth. When he finally succeeds he parades around the house and when I ask him, "What you got???" he stops in his tracks to show off. It's just so damn cute.

Even though he is a bear killer.

    Bear Down

I knew it was only a matter of time. Wrig's decided tonight was the night to de-bowel Chumley's bear. We didn't know what was going on at first, but we realized that Wrigs was way too quiet. We found him violently ripping the stuffing out of Chum's bear and tossing the flaccid bear around like a rag doll. I immediately freak out and scream "Nooooooooo!" Tom shushes me and tells me not to make a big deal about it because he didn't want Chumley to rush in and witness the devastation. I quickly pick up the innards as fast as I can and stuff them back into the bear. I turn around only to see Chum watching in horror. I hide the bear behind my back, grab my sewing kit and go to work...

Good Lord. If anyone were to ask, "So how did you spend your Friday night?" I'd tell them, "Oh you know, the usual. Sat around watching the Golf Channel while frantically sewing up my cat's love toy. And you?"

But it's all worth it. Here are the lovers, getting reacquainted...

And after a few sniffs and licks, all was normal again...

Chumley loves to love his bear in the same spot, right by the doggy gate separating Wrigs from the rest of the house. Wrigs of course runs to the gate for a front row seat when he hears the mating cries from Chumley. I tried to capture a pic but the big lug turned around to look into the camera. He's such a a ham. You can kind of see Chum in the background through the little door.

I'm thinking youtube is the way to go with this footage.

    Caught in the act

There's been somewhat of a mystery over at our house regarding the animals. My husband and I couldn't figure out why the cat seems to be getting larger though, he rarely touches his food and the dog appears a bit leaner yet gobbles every last kernel of food in a flash. I think we've found out why...

There is the culprit, Chumley, pawing Wrigley's nuggets to the side of the bowl and then scooping them into his mouth. In the evenings I usually let Wrigs out before feeding time and if he's enjoying himself out there (which is a rarity because he hates to be outside alone) I let him stay out for as long as he likes. I fill up his bowl so I don't forget to feed him and when he's ready to come in he bolts straight to his feeding station. Well today Wrigs was playing outside and I filled up his bowl then went to do some work in the dining room. A few minutes later I hear LOUD crunching coming from the kitchen. That's when I saw Chum feasting away on the GROWING pups food. This definitely could explain Chum's ever expanding tummy.

After a few mouthfuls Chumley retreats to his "hole" for a quick nap. Lately he's been laying in this sideways upside down position. Maybe it helps to aid the digestion of all the dog food.

    Seriously? What next???

Toothpaste manufactured in China contains poisonous chemicals used in antifreeze. It can kill you.

    .........................................Chopping Onions!

This is one cooking chore that I usually DESPISE but I find this towel-mask-sunglass concoction works really well to ward off onion tears. (Towel is secured behind the head using a claw clip.) The dog freaked out when he saw me and his non stop barking almost made me chop off a finger. If any of you decide to try this remedy just make sure you remove the towel in case someone happens to ring your doorbell. This is not a popular look by today's standards.

    Wrigley The Destroyer

Why is it that all of Wrigley's toys are now just mere carcasses of what they used to be? I'm done spending gobs of money on those cute little stuffed animals just so they can be slaughtered and degutted in all of 3 minutes (most recently, the baby chick in denim overalls or the pig sportin' watermelon pajamas). I usually perform a sturdiness test before I buy to see if the toy can hold up to Wrigs incessant gnawing and tugging. I was strolling the Petco aisles and saw these adorable stuffed toys in all sorts of different dog breeds. The Pug was the cutest of the bunch and since we used to have a Pug I thought I'd get one for Wrigs to play with. But not before I test it's durability! I grab a hold of the head and yank as hard as I can and the damn thing rips right off. I sort of wedged the body into the opening of the head and placed the decapitated Pug back into the basket with the others. I sure hope no one else saw me because I know I looked like a complete psycho. And I felt bad about putting it back but with a $9 price tag I'll search for something with a bit more staying power. Like a spare tire. It'll be a while before I head back to that store.

    Desperate Housecats update

I heard back from the producer of the cat show and as it turns out for the time being this show is "on hold". There have been some unforeseen circumstances that have momentarily stopped production of this show. He is going to keep me abreast of the situation(s) as things progress but he did say that the show is not shelved, and not to give up hope, yet. We'll just have to keep our fingers (and paws) crossed. One thing's for certain in the wonderful world of TV...nothing is for certain.

In the meantime, I'll share this pic of Chumley underneath our bedroom shower curtain. Every morning as Tom and I make the bed Chum jumps up just as we are putting on the final layer (the vinyl curtain) and likes to burrow himself and hide. I think he thinks that we can't see him. For those of you not familiar with why we have a shower curtain on the bed, we have a cat that likes to pee on our beds. Really, it's not because we, ourselves have overactive bladders or enjoy the high from the noxious fumes that emit from this heavy plastic tarp. We do it to save ourselves another trip to the mattress store. We've been married 9 years and we're on our 3rd mattress. I guess that's not so bad, a new mattress every 3 years. But since we've come up with the genius idea of covering our beds in shower curtains, we shouldn't have to buy a new one for quite a while.

I've even tried to beautify the plastic sheath as best I could...matching it to the room decor,

and tying pretty color coordinated bows to each piece.

For our bedroom, I opted for a more opaque curtain with see through cirlces. The other day I got some new pillows and pillow cases and as Tom and I were making the bed it looked so pretty and spring like. I said to Tom, "I love our new pillows and cases. It reminds me of an old fashioned room in a quaint bed and breakfast." And as he finished covering up the bed in plastic he replied, "Yeah, after a murder." I think he's been watching too much CSI.

    Chris Isaak Concert (bumped up)

(Just so you know, there will be run on sentences, grammatical errors, tense errors, inappropriate pronoun use, etc. This blog is just a creative outlet for my thoughts and ramblings so I don't take the time to make it a literary masterpiece. Spell check is about as far as I go and even that's pushing it. So if you can look past all that...enjoy!)

So, about the concert. We were guests of Hart Schaffner & Marx who as I said earlier have partnered with Chris on a new suit line. The president of Hart Marx had an "All Access" pass to go backstage, upstage, under the stage, basically free to roam. He also knew that I was a big fan so he was able to take Tom and I backstage before the show, actually into Chris's dressing room to say hello. We walked in and Chris was wearing his blue suit pants and a black shirt. His drummer, manager and Rodney the dog were in there with him. The first thing I noticed is that Chris has gorgeous hair (doesn't look like he'll ever have to worry about receding), crystal blue eyes and a flawless complexion. Not a wrinkle on his face and no, I don't think he's ever had an injection of botox. He's just genetically (and vocally) blessed.

Of course I had a million questions and before we went in, I had asked Rich (from Hart Marx) if it was ok to do a sort of impromptu interview. He said sure depending on time, but thought that I should write out my questions in case I choke when I see him and Tom chimed in, "Not to worry, she's done this before." It was cute. Again, Tom still holds the title for Most Patient and Tolerant Husband. So after introductions and hand shakes I whipped out my photos from the '03 concert and showed them to Chris. He took all three, studied them and then said, "I remember this!" He looked at the picture of me slapping his behind and laughed and said that he did in fact remember that night on stage. I told him that I just had to do it (the slapping of the bum) because I didn't think I'd have too many opportunities in the future. I was very tempted to start more slapping right then and there but I was able to reel myself in and continue with my questions.

First thing I asked him, "When in the heck are you planning to release a new album??? It's really been waaaaaaay too long. Don't get me wrong, I love the "Best Ofs" and the 18 different versions of Somebody's Crying on i-tunes but I really feel it's time for some new songs! So is that in the works?" I think I may have come across a little harsh off the bat, but I'm very passionate about music and it's not something I can easily stifle. Chris raised his eyebrows to his drummer and they both laughed, then he replied, "Well...we have been in the process of writing new music for a few years now, it's taken a little longer but soon, we'll be releasing a new album. We're really proud of it, and you should be pleased." (this is all from memory so I'm paraphrasing what I can remember here). I told him I was excited to hear that, I didn't press him for a release date but I'm assuming it's going to be sometime in the summer when he launches his solo tour.

My next question was specific to a particular music video. The song is Solitary Man and there is a scene in the video that's, um, well...definitely not G rated. Chris is in bed, alone, naked from the waist up (sheets covering the rest of him). Without going into too much detail I'll let your imagination deduce what is to come. But let me reiterate: He's ALONE in bed, appears to be NAKED, and the song is SOLITARY MAN. You do the math. Oh and did I mention there is a shot of his hand sliding down his stomach and then disappearing under the sheets. Now that you have the background on this I can continue with the question and oh and let me just say that I totally felt like the Chris Farley character on Saturday Night Live who would run into random celebs and ask them all sorts of idiotic things like say for example Joe Pesci, "Remember when you did that scene in Goodfellas and you had to hit that guy with a baseball bat over and over and over again? Do you remember that?? I do. That was cool." Yep, that's totally how I felt. Anyway, here's my second question..."You know in your video Solitary Man, where you're lying in bed, and you're alone...do you know the part I'm talking about?" Chris is smiling but looking at me and then the others in the room like, "Where the hell is she going with this?" But he politely says, "Yeah, I think I know the scene you're talking about." So I continue, "Ok, so the part where it gets sort of um, risque...and it cuts to the body shot, was that you or did you use a body double?" Chris, looking somewhat taken aback, is laughing and so are the rest of the people in the room, including Tom who is now shaking his head between chuckles. Chris then bashfully replies, "That was me." I smile and nod and then say, "Any chance there's an un-edited version of that floating around somewhere?" At this point, he's blushing. It was all in good fun and we all shared a good laugh. Interestingly enough, this question sparked an entire conversation about the video and it's director. Chris told us that the director was known for doing really off the wall type shots. He asked Chris to start hitting himself in that scene, "really beating himself up" and Chris said he didn't feel that was necessary and it wasn't something that he would normally do in real life and Chris said he asked the director if that's something he does regularly because he just didn't think it made a whole lot of sense. It was a very entertaining bit of information that he shared with all of us and we all got quite a kick out of it. I let them know that personally, I'm glad he didn't end up hitting himself. I thought the video turned out just fine the way it is.

We had been in there for a while and it was getting close to show time (about 15 minutes away!)so I only had time for one more question which was, "Will you ever come back to TV and do another series/sitcom? I LOVED The Chris Isaak Show. It really was the Entourage of it's time." Chris pointed to his drummer Kenney and said, "Do you want to take that one?" and Kenney replied, "Actually we're meeting with (a stand up comic guy and now I can't remember his name) tomorrow to talk about a sitcom deal." I was thrilled to hear this so I just about started to jump up and down but I didn't go overboard. I thanked them soooooo much for their generous time and then asked for one quick picture. We took the first one, just looking into the camera and I thanked Chris and then he said, "Wait a minute." He grabbed the wine bottle and then handed me the wine glass and said let's take another one for fun. So that is how I got the 2nd picture. We said our goodbyes and I told them how I couldn't wait for the concert and that I'll be the one screaming the loudest, dancing on my chair. And as usual, I was!

    Chris and Rodney the dog...
